Home Renovation Grants
Home renovation grants are available through the Veterans Benefits Administration to veterans who have certain severe disabilities such as blindness or loss of use of both legs. Grants for home renovation are also available through the VA health care system called HISA (Home Improvement and Structural Alterations) Grants. A HISA grant for $2,000 is available to any veteran who has non-service-connected disabilities under certain conditions or is receiving Pension with aid and attendance or housebound and who is also in the healthcare system. A HISA grant for $6,800 is available veterans who are service-connected disabled at a rating of 50% or more and who are in the healthcare system. Learn more
Aid and Attendance Allowances
A special rating for aid and attendance or housebound is available for veterans who are either receiving Disability Compensation or who are receiving Pension. Aid and attendance ratings are also available for the spouses of veterans who are receiving Compensation if the veteran is rated at 30% or more disabled. Aid and attendance and housebound ratings are additionally available to surviving spouses of veterans who are receiving DIC (Dependency and Indemnity Compensation). Four different rating categories for aid and attendance or housebound are available for veterans receiving Pension or surviving spouses receiving Survivors Pension. All of these special ratings result in additional allowances on top of the benefit amount already being received by the claimant. In all there are 18 different allowances available through the aid and attendance or housebound ratings pertaining to the various benefits above. Learn more
Loan Guaranty and Education Benefits
All veterans with Honorable discharges are eligible for VA's Loan Guaranty program, commonly called a VA loan or VA mortgage. Unlike conventional mortgage programs, the VA mortgages have different rules for qualification and different interest rates. In many cases it is easier to qualify for a VA loan than a conventional loan. Like FHA mortgages, VA mortgages are backed up by the federal government in case of default. Certain surviving spouses of veterans are also eligible for VA loans. Veterans education benefits are perhaps one of the most valuable benefits for individuals who served in the Armed Forces. They are very generous and many people enlist in the service to get these benefits. Certain surviving spouses of veterans and their children are also eligible for certain education benefits as well.
